This Report is the third in a series of regional reports on the Millennium Development Goals in the Asia-Pacific region. It assesses the prospects of reaching the goals and targets, highlighting the potential gaps and indicating how these can be filled. It also looks at the potential for adding value to national initiatives through broader international partnerships.
 
A Parliamentary Guide on MDGs [Arabic]. 2012
This guide is published by UNDP’s Arab Parliamentary Development Initiative in the Arab Region. In the first part, it introduces the concepts of Human Development and MDGs and provides an overview of its status in the region highlighting some of the main challenges obstructing their achievement. The second part is devoted to discussing the role of parliaments in working towards the achievement of the MDGs. It provides an overview of the legal capacities and main processes through which the parliaments practices its four functions: legislation, oversight, representation and budgeting, and presents mechanisms that parliamentarians can utilize to promote MDGs, as well as the means and benefits of cooperating with the civil society. It also highlights some of the main challenges hindering the parliaments of the region from playing a more efficient role. The guide is enriched by experiences contributed by Arab MPs from across the region showcasing how despite the challenges, parliamentarians can have a crucial role in reflecting and advocating the needs and concerns of the people they represent, and urgent developmental issues. Innovative tools and exercises are also provided in the guide, offering the users practical methods and steps that will empower the MP to further engage in MDGs.
 
Achieving the Millennium Development Goals in Africa [English]. 2008
This report identifies the development resulted in a set of minimum thresholds in agriculture, nutrition, education, health and infrastructure that, if fully achieved, will allow African communities and countries to raise productivity and compete successfully in world markets to increase economic growth in reaching the MDGs targets.
 
Achieving the Millennium Development Goals in Africa - Progress Prospects and Policy Implications [English]. 2002
This report highlights the considerable variations in the prospects of individual African countries. Those that have implemented sound economic policies and improved their systems of governance have seen acceleration in growth and poverty reduction. There are, by contrast, other countries where policy improvements have yet to be secured, largely due to conflicts and poor governance. Accelerated progress toward meeting the MDGs will require action by African countries as well as intensified support from the international community.

The reports finally provides an overview of the Mauritanian situation, assessing the probability of achieving each target on a four-level scale of “reachability”.
 
Meeting the MDG Drinking Water and Sanitation Target: The Urban and Rural Challenge of the Decade [English]. 2006
This report looks at the challenge of meeting the Millennium Development Goals target for drinking water and sanitation. Achieving the target poses two major challenges, a rapid pace of urbanization, which requires a major effort even to keep up the current coverage levels, a huge backlog of rural people unserved with basic sanitation and safe drinking water, which calls for an intensive mobilization of resources to reduce the vase coverage gap between urban and rural population.
